DEMOCRACY NOT A PERFECT MODE, BUT MUST PREVAIL : Vanam Jwala Narasimha Rao

 DEMOCRACY NOT A PERFECT MODE,

BUT MUST PREVAIL

The Hans India (17-03-2024)

{Under the ‘Autocratic type of Democratic Leadership,’ which is the order of the day in most so-called democracies, all decision-making powers are centralized in the leader and they do not entertain any suggestions or initiative even from their own cabinet colleagues, not to speak of civil societies, bureaucrats, intellectuals, and experts from different fields. Unfortunately, leadership akin to 'Democratic Dictatorship' emerged in many countries including India, as in the days of Indira Gandhi. The advent of regional parties in India paved way for the ‘Hegemony’ of their founders}-Editor Synopsis

‘Malana,’ an ancient Indian Village in Himachal Pradesh is considered as ‘World’s First and Oldest Democracy.’ Earliest Governance Rules formulated in this village were modified, and being observed even now, as Parliamentary Democracy Model. People in Malana Village, have their own Judiciary System and is governed by Lower house (Kanish Thang) and Upper House (Jayesh Thang) Bicameral Parliament. Penelope Valentine Hester Chetwode, a British Travel writer, and wife of poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, who grew up in Northern India, referred widely Malana in his writings.

Genesis, Evolution and Diminishing Values of Democracy or Democratic Institution is interesting. History recorded establishment of democratic institution in Fifth-Century BC in Athens when Cleisthenes known as the ‘Father of Athenian Democracy,’ reorganized villages of Athens into ten tribes, that shaped the foundation for Democratic Institutions. Pericles also contributed to democratic ideology into Athenian Society. Despite Athens being an example of democracy, it was never entirely democratic. Plato, however, opposed the democratic rule in Ancient Greece.

Developments toward Democratic Government occurred in the Near East and the Indian Sub-Continent also very early. Democracy, an age-old concept in India, encompassed the values of ‘Freedom, Acceptability, Equality, and Inclusivity’ in a society, as per Indian ethos, and allowed its Citizens to lead ‘Quality and Dignified’ life, or what we now call as ‘Choice and Voice.’ It is also chronicled that, the early democratic institutions originated from the ‘Independent Republics of India.’ Greek Historian Diodorus confirmed that Democratic States existed in Ancient India itself.

In the modern era, Westminster Model British Parliament (‘Mother of all Parliaments,’ a phrase coined by British politician John Bright) was adopted by former British Empire Countries, including India. Modern Democracy in India began post-independence, with adoption of Constitution in 1950 and Parliamentary System Federal Structure Democratic Government was established. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister laid solid foundation for Democracy in the country, though, sporadically it is being subjected to untold aberrations! Former USA Presidents George Washington was considered as ‘Father of Modern Democracy,’ and Abraham Lincoln defined Democracy as Government ‘Of the people, By the people and For the people.’ English Philosopher John Locke, founder of British pragmatism too acclaimed as ‘Father of Democracy.’

Spirit of Democracy as Rule by People, is seldom adhered, thanks to the advent of ‘Electoral Autocracies,’ where citizens have no ‘Choice and Voice.’ Broad confidence that, world is becoming democratic is misnomer. Growing doubts are causing apprehension in concerned Individuals, Civil Society Organizations, Intellectuals, and Constitutional Experts about ‘Directionless Democracy World Over.’ Democracy appears to be just limited to periodic or sporadic elections, fair or unfair, in most countries, including India. The harsh reality is, world is unevenly split between ‘Autocracies’ and ‘Democracies.’ Many Democracies are still Half Autocracies! Future of democracy globally being at stake, dissatisfaction is being expressed on its survival, from time to time.

When German President Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in 1933, and when seeds were sown for destruction of democracy, concern was expressed world over. Recently, USA President Joe Biden, in his final State of the Union Address to the Joint Session of US Congress, in first week of March 2024, said that, ‘Democracy is under threat in US and world under Trump.’ Taking objection to Trump telling Russian Leader Putin, ‘Do whatever the hell you want,’ Biden described it as ‘Outrageous, Dangerous, and Unacceptable.’ This is just one instance where leaders like Trump behaved autocratically unmindful of people’s requirements.

The beauty of ‘Matured Democracy’ is that, the Democratic Leaders actively seek inputs from and participation of stakeholders. They create ample opportunities for everyone and value diverse perspectives. In such a Democracy the Government is more a facilitator then regulator and exercise less control on people with regards spending their time, what they believe and practice. People are free to join political parties of their choice and other groups. In Dictatorship or Autocracy, just one leader will have absolute control over the party, government, and the country.

Under the ‘Autocratic type of Democratic Leadership,’ which is the order of the day in most so-called Democracies, all decision-making powers are centralized in the leader and they do not entertain any suggestions or initiative even from their own Cabinet Colleagues, not to speak of Civil Societies, Bureaucrats, Intellectuals, and Experts from Different fields. Unfortunately, Leadership akin to 'Democratic Dictatorship' emerged in many countries including India, as in the days of Indira Gandhi. Advent of Regional Parties in India paved way for ‘Hegemony’ of its Founder.

Post Independence for about quarter of a century, ‘Decision-Making Process’ of political parties was an admirable teamwork. ‘Parliamentary Board’ (High Command) in Congress Party, ‘Polit Bureau’ in Communist Party, or similar body for Jana Sangh and latter Bharatiya Janata Party took decisions based on ‘Consensus.’ Today consensus means decision of ‘Single Individual’ at the Helm of Affairs! Fundamental Principles of democracy, politics, victory, and defeat are seldom observed. Certain facts and reality that parties winning or losing elections is natural, none remains in power forever, and may lose miserably sometime or other, is not taken cognizance of.

Primary Membership of any Political Party in democracy before reaching higher positions, is bygone history. Now, All Shortcuts, as simple as changing shirts, alike to sublimation process where transition of a substance directly from solid state to gas state skipping intermediate liquid state takes place! No ideology and No Commitment at all. It is just Leapfrogging. A hardcore Communist or dedicated Secular Party Member, overnight turns Preferred candidate of communal Party and vice versa. Primary Membership and Customary Waiting is least obligatory for influential and wealthy individuals to get party ticket to contest elections. The instant one (mother) party denies ticket, either person jumps into the race of alternative party, or, the person is lured by them.

In this context, recent happenings are of considerable concern, if they are read ‘Between the Lines.’ For instance, BJP MP from Karnataka, Anant Kumar Hegde's remarks that BJP needs 400 seats to ‘Change the Constitution’ alleging that Congress distorted it to suppress the Hindu Society, are in bad taste. Though BJP leadership distanced itself from his remarks, Congress Leader Chidambaram labelled it as ‘End of Parliamentary Democracy.’ This type of threat to Democracy and Secularism shall not be tolerated. It is also of great concern, that, two latest reports, one by ‘Varieties of Democracy’ and the other by ‘Pew Research Center’ projecting India in top position in Electoral Autocratic Rule.

In another development, the Forgotten Slogan of ‘Akhand Bharat’ advocated by Savarkar, in somewhat different style, surprisingly uttered in Yadadri Temple, which may well have been done ‘Casually, Inadvertently and Unintentionally.’ This happened when Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy visited the Temple, to participate in ‘Brahmotsavam.’ Chanting Vedic Hymns, Learned Brahmin Priests professed that, ‘Let Reorganization of “Akhand Bharat” be accomplished’ (Akhanda Bharatavani Punar Vyavasteekarana Praptirastu).

‘A Majority of Indians, particularly youth, are unlikely to know the kind of Institution Building or Foundational Efforts made for Modern Democratic State. They would be concerned more with proof of pudding of Democracy, Constitution, and Republic. The affairs in India have not remained uniform. In the first 25 years, the Republic witnessed Hegemony of Single Party. After another 25 years of coalition politics at the helm, country had returned to One-Leader and One-Party Syndrome’ observed aptly by Dr N Bhaskar Rao of Center for Media Studies, in his book ‘Rejuvenating the Republic.’ May be this is applicable in most Democracies.

Meanwhile, on the ‘One Nation, One Poll’ feasibility, the Ramnath Kovind Panel recommended simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, followed by Local Body Polls, which was described as ‘One Nation, No Election’ by Jairam Ramesh!!!

Notwithstanding all this, ‘Democracy shall Prevail Perennially Albeit Rider.’

The Hans India (10-03-2024)

(The north of Himalayas is referred to as the Northern Ocean. It is only either from the sphere of Indra, or from the sphere of Brahma, Mountain Soma can clearly be seen. Despite the place being sunless, there will be sunshine, because of the glory of itself, as if with the resplendence of the Sun. The God and Cosmic Souled Vishnu, an embodiment of eleven identical Souls, (Ekadasha Rudras) Shiva, and the God of Gods, Brahma, surrounded by Brahmarshis sojourn on golden Mountain Soma)-Editor’s Note

Proceeding with his description of ‘Ancient Indian Geography’ as depicted by Maharshi Valmiki in Kishkindha Kanda of ‘Sanskrit Ramayana’ and ‘Andhra Valmiki Ramayana’ by Vasudasa Swamy, Monkey’s King Sugreeva, who earlier gave a detailed account of ‘Gateway from Earth to Heaven,’ ‘Inaccessible Hell,’ and ‘the Mountain Sunset,’ in the Eastern, Southern and Western sides respectively, lastly narrated the Northern Side to Monkey Chief Shatabali and his team for going in that direction, towards Himalayas in search of Sitadevi, who was abducted by Ravana.

The places that broadly figured were, the snowy regions and provinces of northern side including Himalayan Mountains; provinces of Mlecchas (frontiers like Gandhara, Kashmira and Kambhoja) namely, Shurashena, Pulinda (related to a hill tribe usually connected with the Vindhyan Range), Prasthara, Madraka, Bharata (Hastinapura); Kambhoja, Yavana, and Shaka; South Kuru Lands; Herat, Balkh (Bahlika), Pourava, Tankan and Rishika countries; Manchuria-Mongolia related China; and Nihara Darada in the north and north-west to the Kashmir valley; Divine province of Uttara Kuru, Heavenly Mountain Soma on which Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva make sojourn for its sacredness etc.

Kambhoja was probably situated somewhere north of Hindu Kush and Kashmir. According to Professor Lassin, wrote Vasudasa Swamy, that, this name is etymologically connected with Combyses. Yavanas or Javanas probably migrated westwards and spread over Asia Minor and Greece in Ancient Times. Javanas historically and originally were an Asiatic People who migrated from the East and came to be known as the Greeks. The Shakas were extended over Northern Asia and Europe. The Bengal recension of Daradas is the Varadas.

The other places sequentially mentioned are: Soma Hermitage, which is adored by the Gods and Gandharvas and Great Peaked Mountain Kala. On going across Mountain Kala, there will be another Great Mountain which is permeated with gold, known as Mountain Sudarshana. Latter there will be Mountain Devasakha, which is a sanctuary, overspread with various birds and adorned with varied trees. On crossing Mountain Devasakha, there is a vacant land (Gobi Desert) spread over hundred yojanas all around, which is devoid of mountains, rivers, trees, and discarded by all beings. On passing through that terrifying wasteland one can reach Mount Kailash.

Kailash Mountain believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and also Kubera, the God of Prosperity, was to the north of Himalayas. It would appear to correspond with the Kwenlun Range, which extends northwards and connects with the Altay Chain, a mountain range in Central Asia and Eastern Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan converge, and where the rivers Irtysh and Ob have their headwaters. Even it could have been by the south skirts of the desert towards the west, to pass by the Kailash Range, according to Ancient Geography. This is presently in Tibet.

There one can find, the delightful mansion of Kubera, constructed by the Divine Architect Vishvakarma, and which in shine will be like a silver cloud and processed with gold. There was also an Extensive Lake, ‘Vaswoukasara,’ which is full of lotuses and costuses, flooded by swans and partridges. The Lake is adored by multitudes of Apsaras, the Divine Ladies. Kubera will be rejoicing there along with yakshas. Nearby the mountains there will be caves, which will be shining like moon. Thereafter on reaching Mount Krauncha (Krounchadri) one need to be cautious to enter into a highly impassable and unenterable tunnel of that mountain.

This is said to be the birthplace of Kumara or Skanda, the son of Shiva-Parvati-Ganga who made this bore by using His 'Divine power.' It is believed that, in that tunnel, Sages similar to Sun in their resplendence and godly in their appearance reside at the request of gods. Mountain Kaama (Kama Shaila) and the abode of birds Mount Maanasa are also there nearby. Mount Manasa is unreachable and to enter it, is next to impossible, even for Gods and Demons alike.

On moving away from Mount Krauncha, there is Mountain Mainaka with a Mansion of Demon Maya, built by himself. On crossing over that province there is the hermitage adored by Siddhas, Vaikhanasas, and Vaalakhilyaas. There is also the lake ‘Vaikhanasa’ overspread with golden lotuses, and overrun with prosperous swans whose resplendence will be similar to the tender sun. The carrier elephant of Kubera, ‘Sarvabhouma’ will be visiting that place along with She-Elephants.

Passing that lake there will be just a clear sky which will be devoid of moon, or sun, or the clusters of stars, and it will be cloudless and noiseless. That place will be luminescent with sages who have accomplished their asceticism and who take rest at that place, as if illuminated with innumerable rays of the sun. On crossing over that there is deep flowing River Shailoda. Then there is the North Kuru, the dwelling of those who have achieved divine merit in their previous births and now born in that country to enjoy the fruits of that divine merit, thus that country itself is earmarked for meritorious beings.

At that place North Kuru, the lotuses in the rivers will be golden in manner. The runners and stalks of lotus plants bear lotus leaves that are bluish like the bluishness of ‘Rock Lapis Lazuli.’ There will be thousands of such rivers filled with such plants in water, and with waters mingled with the waters of other lakes, and decorated with the thickets of red Costuses alongshore. Everywhere that province shines forth with highly valuable leaves which will be in the hue of sapphires, with fibrils in the hue of gold, and with amazing thickets of blue costuses around lakes.

That province is with amazing mountains that are replete with every kind of jewel, golden in hue, splendorous like Ritual-fire, and they are intercalated into the deep flowing rivers. These lands and rivers are self-contained and self-sufficient. There the trees will be eternally flowering and fruiting on which birds will be endlessly squawking. Some of the best trees will be yielding such of those adornments which will be vying with ornament made with pearls or with Lapis Gemstones, and suitable both for women and men. There the radiantly bright celestials like Gandharvas, kinnaras, Siddhas, Vidyadharas will be delighting along with their own females. All the inhabitants of North Kuru were supposed to have performed virtuous deeds in earlier births, hence they are accorded with paradisiacal pleasures now.

On passing beyond that mountain in Uttara Kuru, there is Northern Ocean, a treasure trove of waters, and in the mid of which there is Gigantic Golden Mountain Soma. The north of Himalayas is referred as the Northern Ocean. It is only either from the sphere of Indra, or from the sphere of Brahma, Mountain Soma can clearly be seen. Despite the place is sunless, there will be sunshine, because of the glory of itself, as if with the resplendence of the Sun. The God and Cosmic Souled Vishnu, an embodiment of eleven identical Souls, (Ekadasha Rudras) Shiva, and the God of Gods Brahma surrounded by Brahmarshis sojourn on golden Mountain Soma.

North of Kuru province, there is no way out even for Daityas, Danavas, Yakshas, Gandharvas etc. though they possess some extraordinary capabilities. Here there is a glimpse of the Arctic region with the Aurora Borealis to the north of the Uttara Kuru realms. It is said that, Mountain Soma is an impenetrable one even for gods there is no knowledge of those sunless and boundless realms available far and beyond.

{It is roughly calculated that the total time taken for the sun to pass from Meru to Astagiri is said to be one and a half hours. The impeccable knowledge exhibited by Maharshi Valmiki in his Sanskrit Ramayana and equally similar to that by Vasudasa Swamy in his unmatchable and first and perhaps last of its kind translation into Telugu titled Andhra Valmiki Ramayana, about the Geographical Details of the Ancient Universe, many of which may now be found in Google Maps, was simply astounding. The context was, in the ‘Kishkindha Kanda’ Sri Rama after befriending with Monkey’s King Sugreeva, and fulfilling his desire to kill Vali, it was the turn of Sugreeva to fulfill his promise made to Sri Rama to find the whereabouts of Sita abducted by Ravana.

As part of this, and after sending Monkey Chiefs to East and South, Sugreeva directed another Monkey Chief Sushena father of Lady Tara, to search for Sita in the Western Direction. In the process, Sugreeva described the west side topography comprising of magnificent mountains in northwest of India, the ocean (present Arabian Sea) down south to it, and Persian (Iran is divided into 31 provinces known as Persian Provinces) provinces. Then sequentially the Saurashtra (Now Surat and could also be Kathiawar, a peninsular region of Gujarat, located on the Arabian Sea coast), Bahlika (located on the southern side of Kashmir), Candracitra (present-day Mathura or Shuura Desha) provinces.

In the Western Quarter, encircled with enmeshed mountains, Blest or Holy or Sacred Rivers, whose cool water flows westward, forests of sages, mountains in forests and lands, including highly towering mountains that are chilly are seen. From there moving towards the Western Ocean, one can see seawater ruffled by sharks and crocodiles. Later there can be seen, bushes of Ketaka (A tortuous evergreen tree or shrub with conspicuous leg roots and prickly stems), Tamala (an evergreen tree the leaf of which is known as Tejpatta or Tamalpatra or Tejpat or Malabar leaf), and a thick patch of shrubbery with coconut trees. Moving further, the delightful cities along shore, Muraci (Murachipattana), Jatipura, Avantee and Angalopa and forest of Alakshita are seen.

Then at the junction of River Sindhu with the ocean, Mouth of Indus, there was the huge Golden Mountain Hemagiri (Could be the same as Hala Range adjacent to Southern Valleys alongside River Sindhu), scattered with abundant gigantic trees. Flying Lions or the winged lions Denoting Saint Mark, Power and Courage inhibit on the attractive edges of that mountain, hauling sharks, fish, and elephant seals to their dens. Elephants inhibiting on top of the mountain are contended, conceited, and trumpeting like thunderous clouds, will be moving everywhere adjoining the mountain abutted by water and nearby retreats of Flying Lions.

On seagoing or travelling in the ocean, measuring hundred Yojanas of height peak, Mount Pariyatra, a range of mountains in the Central India or could be of Suleiman Range, now in Pakistan will appear. However, it is highly difficult to see it, since it will be amazingly dazzling. The Mountain is the abode of 24 crores of huge and terrible (Human) Gandharvas whose radiance looks like fire and who can change their appearance as they wish. This area could even be Sulaiman Range, in and around present-day Afghanistan and may not be the one in Vindhya Range. Hence the place could be, what is now known as, ‘Candahar’ or Afghanistan or the ancient ‘Gandhara Dsha.’

Proceeding further in that sea past Mount Pariyatra, another great Mountain, Vajra Dhara, standing like diamond shaped and shining like Jewel Lapis (deep blue metamorphic rock) will appear. This Mountain too will be spiraling tall of Hundred Yojanas, where assorted trees and mountaineers will be spreading over it. In the fourth quarter of that ocean from land, Mountain Chakra Vantha is there. Vishvakarma, the Divine Architect, constructed a Thousand Spokes wheel (Sahasrara Chakra) on it. This wheel is said to be a machine of weaponry or sub-weapons, and such spectacular facilities are provided by Vishvakarma not only for Gods, but also to Demons, when they were threatened by enemies. The legend was that Vishnu in the form of Purushottama snatched this wheel weapon from the custody of Hayagriva Demon and also Backbone of another Demon Pancajana, residing there. This Backbone, a conch-shell is known as 'Panchajanya Conch’ handled by Vishnu.

In the sequence, after Sixty Yojanas, Mountain Varaha with Silver Peaks, delightful cliffs and spacious caves will be there, in void of Rain God’s abode, the ocean. The City of Naraka (Not the one killed by Lord Srikrishna), Pragjyotisha is there, which is completely golden. Said to be the first kingdom of Assam, this mythological area covered parts of modern-day Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. In the extension of Mount Varaha, there is seen Mount Meghavanta (Sarva Souvarna), the entirely Golden Mountain containing waterfalls and fast-moving. There, facing waterfalls of the Mountain, roaring of elephants, wild boars, lions, and tigers will be seen. Group of Gods coronated Lord Indra on this Mountain and hence it was known as Meghavanta.

On proceeding further, will appear, the exuberant Range of Sixty Thousand Golden Mountains, sunny all around with the touch of young Sun. In the midst of that Range, there is the unique and kingly Mountain, the Mount Meru (Meru Parvata or Uttara Meru Savarni). This is also known as Sumeru, Sineru, or Maha Meru and considered to be the center of all Physical, Metaphysical, and Spiritual Universes as well as part of the Cosmic Ocean. Varaha, Meghavanta and finally Meru, in sequence could also be mountain peaks of the Zagros range, located across the Arabian Sea in Iran, extending to Iraq.

Vishv Devas, Vasavas, Adityas, Maruts, and other celestials coming for morning prayers to Meru will abide their time for the dusking Sun, and when they conclude worshipping him, the Sun goes to Mount Astagiri, the Setting or Western Mountain 'Sunset' where he vanishes for all beings for that day. The sun travels to reach the western mountain at a speed of 10 thousand Amadas (Amada equals to either 8 or 10 miles) per one Ghadiya (Hindu unit of time equal to 24 minutes). It is roughly calculated that the total time taken to pass from Meru to Astagiri is said to be one and half hours. There exists a supreme and heavenly castle of Varuna with a Great Hall, that shines like Sun and raised by the Divine Architect Vishvakarma. In between Meru and Astagiri, a Gigantic Date Palm Tree (Taala Vruksha) is seen. This evidences that, this area could be present day Arabian and ancient Persian province.

This is where, Sage Meru Saavarni, an enlightened Manu and an identical and equivalent character to Brahma resides. On obliterating the utter darkness of all the earthly world up to here, the Sun, will go to the Mount Astagiri and from there, no knowledge of those dark and infinite places.

Vasudasa Swamy quoting Ancient Geography commented here that, Valmiki makes a mention to a few places only, most of which are mountains in the west and ends with land of the setting Sun. Obviously the so-called famed nations of the west, belonging to Egypt, Assyria, and Greece, despite their tall claims, had not risen to power during the time of Valmiki. Even if they were in existence at all, proper communication was not at established between them and the Indian Aryans.
