Exciting, Amazing Amsterdam with Frequent Drizzle : Vanam Jwala Narasimha Rao

Exciting, Amazing Amsterdam with Frequent Drizzle

Vanam Jwala Narasimha Rao

The Hans India (25-08-20240

On a pleasant and slightly drizzling rainy afternoon on August 14, 2024, I along with my wife, daughter and son in law landed in ‘Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS)’ the main ‘International Airport’ of the Netherlands. The name referred to is, a low-lying wetland, and was even a fully-fledged ‘Haarlemer Lake.’ At the bottom this Lake, over four meters below sea level, which was drained in 1852 for the construction of ‘Fort Schiphol’ (one of several forts located around Amsterdam) lies ‘Schiphol.’ In fact, ‘Schiphol Railway station’ is also beneath the Airport Terminal Complex, from where we travelled in the International High Speed Rail Eurostar to Paris and back.

‘Schiphol Fort’ was demolished in 1934 to build a provincial road from ‘Amstelveen’ to ‘Schiphol.’ The Airport began as a military airfield during the First World War in September 1916. Four years later it became a Civilian Airport. The development of ‘Schiphol Airport’ attracted many people, many of whom settled in ‘Amstelveen’ a municipality and city in Netherlands, and is a suburban part of the ‘Amsterdam Metropolitan’ Area. In 2004 ‘Amstelveen’ was voted the most attractive city in Netherlands to live. Currently ‘Amstelveen’ is in top three on the national list of best cities to live in. ‘Amstelveen’ Locality’s landscaping and close proximity to ‘Schiphol Airport’ and ‘Railway Station’ attracted international attention, making it a prime location. KLM is headquartered here with its hub at nearby Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

The purpose of our short visit, is to participate in the House Warming Celebration on August 28, 2024 in my son’s new house in ‘Amstelveen Water Circle’ closer to our granddaughters’ school, the best in city, and spend few weeks with them.  He is working for UBER Technologies in a Senior Position, and functioning from Amsterdam. He affectionately received us at the Airport, and drove in a Cab to his rental residence, in this famed ‘Amstelveen’ Locality, which in the early 20th Century was a small rural village.

In ‘Amstelveen’ the summers are comfortable and partly cloudy and the winters are long, very cold, windy, and mostly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies. In fact, climate, and weather of whole of Amsterdam, Capital of Netherlands, obviously influenced by its proximity to the North Sea, appears to play a significant role in shaping the city's lifestyle, attractiveness, and overall livability for permanent residents, semi-permanent residents, and visitors like us.

My son who has been staying here for over a year, briefed us that the four seasons, Winter (December to February), Spring (March to May), Summer (June to August), and Autumn (September to November) have varied temperatures. For visitors like us, late Spring, the whole of Summer, and early Autumn before it gets cool and wet are ideal to stay. He said that, during this period temperatures range from gradual warming to average to yet to be cooled.

Amsterdam is known for its frequent rain, and lovely sunshine infrequently, though it is often light drizzle rather than heavy downpours. During the Summer (Now, when we are here) the city appears to be with long sunny days. My son says that, for those living in Amsterdam year-round, the climate is generally comfortable, though the frequent drizzle and gray skies can be a downside for some. Individuals living in Amsterdam for extended periods, such as students, or expatriates, often find the climate manageable. Tourists may find Amsterdam's weather a minor inconvenience, but thoroughly enjoy it. Summer is the ‘Rightest Time’ for visitors.

Amsterdam is known for its cycling culture. I noticed on my way from Amsterdam Airport to my son’s residence, and later moving on the roads in city, that, a greater number of cycles than vehicles, and gradually understood that cycling is the preferred mode of transport for many and is deeply ingrained in Amsterdam's culture, making it one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. The city has an extensive network of dedicated bike lanes, flat terrain, and convenient bike parking facilities, making it safe and easy to get around.

In addition, Amsterdam has excellent cost-effective public transport, avoids parking hassles, and eco-friendly, and hence everyone considers this before buying an own car. Depending on the bike is economical, healthy, and practical in a city with excellent bike lanes. Public transport and cycling are usually the most cost-effective and practical options here. This plan allows for a gradual transition into life in Amsterdam, prioritizing essential needs while balancing cost and convenience.

It is very interesting to study the process of identifying temporary, semi-permanent and permanent accommodation, furnishing either along with rented house or on rental basis, organizing interiors, gardening etc. Normally those who migrate to Amsterdam for short or longer periods, before securing long-term housing, consider to prefer temporary accommodation, either an apartment or an independent spacious house, the rental cost of which vary depending on location and size. This enables flexibility and immediate availability. In the highly competitive rental market in Amsterdam, there are several Agencies which will assist in identifying choicest rental or ownership accommodation.

The rental types with furniture is preferred because it is convenient though bit more expensive, compared to unfurnished which is cheaper, but it requires the occupant to arrange furniture either for rent or by purchase. However, if the plan is to stay for over 5 years, buying may be cost-effective. This in a way is long-term investment and potential appreciation in property value. By and large ‘Preferred Furniture Arrangements’ are rental. Amsterdam has several companies specializing in rental furniture.

If high-income families prefer an independent house (‘Vrijstaand Huis’ in Dutch meaning Detached House) in or around Amsterdam, several considerations need to be kept in mind, including variations in the types of houses available, costs, maintenance, and practical feasibility. For instance, ‘Standalone Houses’ with no shared walls often come with private gardens and larger plots of land. Semi-Detached Houses that are common in suburban areas share one wall with a neighboring property. Townhouses or Terraced houses typically found in more urban areas, share walls with neighboring properties on both sides.

Villas are Large, often luxurious usually located in upscale suburban or rural areas closer to city centers, with smaller plots but still offering independence. The cost of independent houses varies significantly based on proximity to Amsterdam's center and depending on luxury and location. Suburbs like ‘Amstelveen’ area offer more options for independent houses compared to the city center, where space is limited. Annual maintenance for a detached house, including garden, exterior, and interior upkeep etc. costs substantially.

In my brief stay of ten days, I noticed that, Amsterdam is a city renowned for its rich culture, picturesque canals, and vibrant community, either for a semi-permanent stay or envision making it forever home. I also understood that, from finding the perfect independent house and arranging rental furniture initially, and own furniture later, with a designer's touch, to cultivating a beautiful garden, every step is an opportunity in this welcoming city.

The city's efficient infrastructure make daily life a pleasure. Navigating traffic, whether by bike or on foot, becomes second nature. With time, the city’s well-maintained streets, vibrant neighborhoods, and quiet canals become part of one’s daily life, and what begins as a temporary move for anyone, may transform into a permanent embrace of Amsterdam’s enriching and welcoming lifestyle.

Lastly, there are several Indian provision shops cater to the needs of the Indian community, including those from South India. Variety of South Indian groceries, including rice, lentils, spices, and ready-to-eat snacks, as well as, items such as coconut, beetle leaves, flowers, camphor, turmeric, Kumkum etc. which are essential for performing Puja during Housewarming (Gruha Pravesh) ceremonies, that includes ‘Satyanarayana Vratam’ are available, as well as Pujari.

DEPICTING THE DIVINE MOTHER : Vanam Jwala Narasimha Rao

  DEPICTING THE DIVINE MOTHER

Vanam Jwala Narasimha Rao

The Hans India (18-08-2024)

{American couple Sailakshmi and Dr Venki Venkatesh throw light on the 300 divine names of ‘Sri Lalitha Tri Shati’ in honor of ‘Sri Lalita Maha Tripurasundari Devi’, which forms a part of ‘Brahmanda Purana’} – Editor’s Note

Indian origin USA Citizens, and ‘Lifelong Devotees of Tripurasundari,’ Sailakshmi (Kallakuri Lakshmibai) and Dr Venki Venkatesh, authored the Magnum Opus Book ‘Tri Shati (triSati)’ describing meanings and commentary for 300 Names of ‘Sri Lalita Tripurasundari Devi’ with explanation. This is correlated to ‘Sri Vidya Traditions and Philosophy’ or the Indian ancient wisdom, that encompasses the multi-faceted concepts of ‘Ultimate Realization’ through ‘Worship of Mother Goddess, Chanting Mantras, Meditation and Mukthi Sadhana’ leading to emancipation.

The Tri Shati central idea of ‘Mother (Shakti) and Father (Eashwara) Principle’ and their Unity played through the authors. The book is more than a mere Ritual Manual for Chanting and Upasana. This ‘Sanskrit Transliteration’ contains transcripts of Sanskrit Texts in three Alphabets of Sanskrit, Telugu, and English languages. A different notation is introduced in the English Script, using the combination of ‘Lower-and Upper-Case Alphabets’ (Examples: triSati, Sri Cakra Meru, Sakti kUTam etc.)

The Lalitha ‘Tri Shati Stotram’ and ‘Sahasra Nama’ are typically commented by scholars and Spiritual Leaders who specialized in Hindu scriptures. Vishnu Purana, Mahabharata, Hayagriva Upanishad etc. referred to Horse Headed Hayagriva, the divinity of knowledge and wisdom, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, crediting him with imparting the knowledge of sacred Vedas to highly respected sage Agastya, who was equally known for his vast knowledge and contributions to Hindu Scriptures and Practices. When Agastya, devotee of Goddess Lalitha, desired to learn about her divine aspects and the secret of knowledge associated with her worship, Hayagriva appeared before him and taught him the ‘Lalitha Tri Shati Stotram’ the highly revered hymn dedicated to Goddess ‘Lalitha Tripura Sundari. This is thus, considered to be powerful and mystical composition that bestows immense spiritual benefits upon its reciters.

The 300 names of philosophical hymn ‘Sri Lalitha Tri Shati’ in honor of ‘Sri Lalita Maha Tripurasundari Devi’ forms part of ‘Brahmanda Purana’ also has a commentary attributed to ‘Adi Shankara.’ These Names have ‘Seed Letters’ or ‘Sanskrit Version of Bija Akshara’ of the 15 Letter ‘Sri Vidya Panchadashi Mantra’ meaning that, each name is considered as a ‘Mantra.’ Bija may be Single Alphabet or combination of Alphabets, and each in Sanskrit has a meaning. For instance, Alphabet ‘A’ is the origin of ‘AUM’ means unification, non-destruction etc.

There are 20 names for each letter. Each recitation includes repetition of the Panchadashi Mantra as many times. Portraying ‘Sri Maha Tripura Sundari’ as the ‘Reflection of Shiva, that is Brahman’ is the philosophical theme of the ‘Sri Lalitha Tri Shati’ which is divided in to three parts (or KUTa). The mantra represents the subtle form of Goddess ‘Sri Maha Tripura Sundari.’ First 19 Shlokas (Devi’s face) comprise first 5 ‘Seed Letters,’ next 23 Shlokas (Devi’s upper body from neck to lip) comprise second 6 ‘Seed Letters,’ and remaining 17 Shlokas (Devi’s lower body to the feet) comprise the third 4 ‘Seed Letters.’

About Sri Vidya, its ritual traditions with broad regional variations, and Sri Chakra or Devi Yantra, its mystical formation, its three-dimensional form known as ‘Maha Meru’ form part of introduction. Commentary with explanation of Panchadashi Mantra commences with the ‘Meditation Verse’ meaning of which is that, devotee saluting the eternal Devi holding Sugar Cane Bow and Arrows in both hands, depicting Boundless Happiness (Bliss or Paramananda), embodiment of kindness, and Brahmananda Swaroopini.

Meditating on ‘Panchadashi Mantra’ and realizing it leads the devotee to self-realization. The Thought and Speech are the first stage of ‘Panchadashi Mantra.’ Center for speech is in brain, but produced through throat, tongue, teeth, lips, and ears. The auspicious qualities of Devi, are: Righteous Desires, Desire for Fulfilment, Presence of Godliness, to do Good Deeds, Brahma Jnana suggesting that an individual to use them appropriately.

Many terminologies are portrayed in the subsequent chapters. Devi is the Vidya of Kamdarpa (abundant love), and removes negativities of Kaliyuga, if only one observes Nine Types of Worship, namely, Sravanam, Kirtana, Smarana, Paada Seva, Archana, Namaskaram, Dasya, Sakhyata and Atma Nivedana. Devi is the Ultimate Bliss or Chidananda and in the form of knowledge as super consciousness. She is the Prehistoric sound of ‘AUM’ or all the sounds.

Devi can be realized only by worshiping her with total devotion, absolute peaceful state, and meditates with total focus on her, with an absolute state of Bliss. She is Sovereign, worshiped in solitude, and is unique in her nature, cannot be compared and described as equivalent to any particular form. Devi the creator of all the worlds, will be observing all the happenings in the universe (millions of worlds) of Her creation. She is the substratum (Bedrock) that supports and activates the Universe. Devi the Saguna, in fact, by ‘Her Will’ encourages and motivates Ishwara the Nirguna, for creating the universe.

Devi is worshiped with third eye in the forehead, which shines like a black dot made from Kasturi or known as ‘Kasturi Tilaka’ coming from the musk deer. She is smeared with yellow turmeric powder and wears red vermillion powder dot on her forehead. Her every limb glows with perfect characteristics, whose resplendent body is in the form of two creepers, alluding to the Samudrika Shastra, the ancient Sanskrit Treatise on Body Analysis. She has an enchanting beauty to behold and the image of compassion. Unlimited knowledge of Truth is her body.

Devi is the sound and in the form of ‘hrIm’ (Single letter Mantra having energy) the fifth seed letter (Bijakshar) of ‘Panchadashi Mantra’ which is the pot of fire, the moonlight, brilliance of Sun, lightening of clouds, and is like lion living in the caves of high mountains. Devi the seed of intellect, is endowed with nine types of Emotions (Navarasa). Devi has the form of ‘ha kara’ the sixth letter of ‘Panchadashi Mantra.’ She is red in color of lac, a kind of wax. Her vehicle or conveyance is Lion, the symbol of both rulership and cruelty.

Devi is love of Kapali who has skulls in his hand. She takes the food offered in sacred fire. She has a heart as soft as butter and is kind hearted. She derives pleasure by seeing the dance of celestial women or Apsarasas and cosmic dance of her creation. She is served by Lakshmi, worshiped by the nature of mind, present in all scriptures and ritual practices. She is endowed with all Time and shows the path to all beings to lead righteous life.

Before conclusion, authors Sailakshmi and Venki Venkatesh, enunciating the meaning of Shlokas 58 and 59, forming part of third part of seed letters or the ‘Sakti KUTam’ portrayed Devi as ‘Upanishad of the Wisdom’ which is placed on top of the ultimate philosophy of Veda. Devi is like Ganga in the snow bound mountains. She is like the Divine and Sacred Gem of Vishnu, a brilliant diamond known as ‘Kaustubh’ found in waters of Sea of Milk (Ksheera Sagara) when churned by demons and gods.

Summarizing this, it is depicted that, sacred River Ganga originates in the proximity of ‘Kailasa’ the Abode of the ‘Divine Couple Shiva and Uma,’ and the same idea is conveyed in ‘Sri Lalita Sahasra Nama.’ Vishnu by wearing ‘Kaustubh’ close to His Heart, exemplifies the ‘Divine Pair Lakshmi Narayana’ which is conceptually analogous to the ‘Divine Couple Shiva and Uma.’  In essence, ‘the Bliss of being one with Parabrahma is the Goal of all Human Existence and there is nothing higher than that. By gaining Brahma Vidya the Jiva becomes absorbed in the Source Brahman from where it came.’ In their ultimate dedication, authors with abundant devotion, mentioned that, ‘with humble efforts and limited knowledge we shared our insights of 300 names of Divine Mother, the Para Sakti called the ‘Sri Lalita Tri Shati (triSati).’

Authors’ unparallel effort deserve PhDs from an ‘Adhyatmika Vishva Vidyalaya’ or Spiritual University.
