Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao desires to organize
the First of its kind Telangana World Telugu Conference coinciding with the
State Formation Day celebrations in the Universal city of Hyderabad steered by
the newly formed Telangana Sahitya Academy. CM says that this World Telugu
Conference shall be organized on a grandeur level so that Telugu speaking
people all over the world remember this event forever and ever as a landmark in
the annals of Telugu language, literature and culture. Telugu linguists, literates, scholars, poets,
verse writers, language lovers from other states and abroad would be invited to
the Conference. Literary discussions, symposia, workshops, poetic gatherings
(Kavi Sammelanam), traditional Ashthavadhanas,
as well as publication of valuable
hitherto unpublished invaluable literary works of the Telangana famous writers,
will form part of the world Telugu meet.
The Conference would mirror to the world, all that,
that has happened and has been happening for the development of Telangana Telugu
language and literature. Efforts are afoot by the government already in this
direction. Formal declaration of the
intention and the schedule as well as launching will happen on 2nd
June-the state formation day. In all probabilities the event that is likely to
actually commence sometime during the third week of June 2017 will be of week
to ten days duration.
A cross section of outstanding literary personalities
who involved in yeomen work from Telangana region and elsewhere would be recognized
during the Conference. The Conference will extensively deliberate on the great
contributions made by writers, poets, literary luminaries from the ancient
times through the medieval period to modern days for Telangana Telugu language
and literature. The CM also desired that
the ensuing Conference, a platform to remember and recollect the great
contributions that the Telangana writers made, should also showcase the role
played by Telangana literary figures in the Traditional literature, Avadhanams as
well as modern literature. Contributions to the field of films, journalism, novel
and short story, poetry, Harikatha, Burrakatha, Yaksha Gana and poetry will
also be duly recognized. Delegates from the US, Europe, Gulf, Australia, New
Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia would be invited to the Conference and become
partners in the literary excellence.
The first ever World Telugu Conference during the reign
of united Andhra Pradesh was held in Hyderabad in 1975 when Jalagam Vengala Rao
was the Chief Minister beginning from that year’s Ugadi day the 12th
of April for 7 days. Virtually who’s who
from the Telugu literary field both within the country and abroad participated
in the conference belonging to film personalities, politicians, artistes,
journalists, Avadhanis, scholars, literary connoisseurs to common Telugu loving
people. A host of meetings, discussions, poets gathering, workshops, and
performances took place. The Lal Bahadur
Stadium became the main dais and it was named as Kakatiya Nagar.
On the Nagarjuna Peetham platform meant for literary
discussions 1500 personalities participated in all catering to 28 subjects and
100 scholarly papers were presented on the occasion. Sri Krishnadevaraya Nagar was the platform
for Cultural programmes. 980 delegates from 16 countries and 4,500 from within
the country attended the Conference. The then Chief Minister Vengala Rao led a
rally of thousands of people from Charminar to the LB Stadium on the inaugural
day walking all the way for four to five hours. The Inaugural session began
with the famous song, “Maa Telugu Talli ki” sung by none other than the
original singer Tanguturi Surya Kumari and the writer of the song Sankarambadi
Sundaraachari was also present on the occasion.
Maha Kavi Sri Sri led a protest march and organised a
parallel Telugu Mahasabha and was arrested along with others but later was
released. The literary duel between Kavisamraat Viswanatha Satyanarayana and Maha
Kavi Sri Sri then reached its crescendo during the Conference. A letter
opposing the Conference purportedly written by Viswanatha was sent to the
newspapers and Viswanatha alleged that Sri Sri had forged his signature. Sri
Sri had to spend one night in Bolarum Police station.
The second world Telugu Conference was held in Kaulalampur
in Malaysia from April 14 to 18, 1981, when T Anjaiah was the Chief Minister.
AP government, World Telugu Federation and Malaysia Telugu Association have organised
the event. The CM himself had attended the Conference. The then Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathi Bin
Mohammed was the chief guest. The then
President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy sent a special message expressing the hope that
the relationship, love and affection among the Telugus living world over should
continue. Delegates from Mauritius, Fiji, Sri Lanka and South Africa attended
the Conference.
The third conference was held for three days from
December 10 to 13, 1990 at Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mecca area in Mauritius
in which it’s Governor Veerasami Ringuda, Prime Minister Anirudh Jagannadh were
the chief guests. The fourth conference was held at the temple town of Tirupati
from Dec 27 to 29, 2012 when N Kiran Kumar Reddy was the CM. President Pranab
Mukherjee inaugurated the conference and Governor ESL Narasimhan also
participated. Photographs of 108 Telugu prominent personalities were kept for
the participants to have a view.
If the proposed first world Telugu Conference in
Telangana state to be successful it should be organised on a higher note than
the previous conferences. There is a marked difference between the aims and
objectives of the World Telugu conferences held under the united AP and now in Telangana
State. A new thought and planning is necessary other than forming various ritual
committees with the government departments and from outsiders. It will be
better if the organisers think on how to coordinate among the cultural
organisations in the state, how to coordinate with institutions, people from
AP, and other states and from abroad, how to involve the media in the organisation
of the conference etc. They have to think about on how to coordinate among the
political parties.
It is better if district level committee meetings take
place well in advance before organizing them at the regional and state level.
An appropriate and beautiful Logo can also be planned exclusively for the
Conference. As suggested by the CM, books, monographs, articles should be
published on the Telangana contribution to the Telugu language and literature.
It will be nice if the groundbreaking ceremony for the Cultural Forum Kala Bharathi
takes place as part of the Conference.
Proper publicity campaign about the Conference should be launched in
other states and in abroad to get more delegates and participants. The proposed First Telugu World Conference in
Telangana state should become the right mixture of Telangana culture,
literature, language and its traditions. The Conference should be remembered
for the days and years to come and should retain as a fond memory for participants.
